Stroage Containers

Okay so I have heard that there are certain plastic containers (specifically for storing water) that are dangerous to use when storing for long periods of time. I would just like some clarity with which ones are safe and which ones are not...Even the 32 oz  "unbreakable" water bottles for a while lost popularity due to some sort of potential chemical secretion and I ended up getting an aluminum one to replace it. While those aren't for long term, it does confuse me when it comes to what is deemed safe and what is not safe. There seem to be so many varying opinions on that matter.

I believe the issue with those "unbreakable" cups were when people heat them up. Also this was a concern with the plastic baby bottles (are they the same material?). They say now not to use in the dishwasher and a lot of them have that BPA free tags on them. I had heard of these reports myself, and ended up opting for an aluminum bottle for about a month or so. Now I have a couple of the unbreakable water bottles and use them ALL THE TIME! I love them. There was one that had liquid in it and was left in the car of at least a week. This one will be thrown away. As for any long term storage, I am not sure. The gallon water from the grocery stores last about a year but thats the extent of my water storage knowledge.

I use the water bottles from the store and try and rotate them before the 6 or 7th month. I use those "unbreakable" water bottles as well and feel like they are safe. I have also used empty soda 2 liters for water storage. I clean them out real good,  make sure that they are dried up, and then I put some good water in them with a dash of good bleach. You can also store these empty bottles and some good bleach for future use. Have you looked into those rain drums? If it rains a lot in your area you could put one of these outside to collect water. I am not sure how you would purify that but there's bound to be someone who has some sort of experience with these.

I primarily store items in glass. I reuse glass jars from applesauce, raw milk (expensive), or jams. I bought these off of amazon http://www.amazon.com/Libbey-2-Ounce-Small-Plastic-8-Piece/dp/B001K40IOS/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1308329250&sr=8-13 They are nice and hardy little containers. I grew up storing things in class containers and I'm not sure if my parents did it because of the potential chemicals in plastic or what but I've continued it.

You want to make sure that the glass is good for the stove, microwave, freezer, and refrigerator but what about the tops of the containers? Are they made of plastic or another material?
