I think it would be a good idea to post helpful recipes for common food storage items such as TVP meat or wheat. Does anyone have any good recipes for oatmeal? I have found a good wheat recipe and I'll post it tonight, I don't have it on me right now.

Thats a great idea...I found a recipe for wheat on the blog link from this site. (I have a wheat bread recipe that is fabulous but I will have to dig it up)

Whole Wheat Muffins:

2 c. whole wheat flour
¼ tsp salt
1 tsp soda

Mix dry ingredients.

1 c. brown sugar
1 c. milk
1/3 c. butter, melted
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla

Mix wet ingredients.

Combine wet and dry ingredients and stir just until moistened. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.

(this is in the order that was listed on the site but I think the brown sugar should be with the dry ingredients?!....thats what I would think but am not sure it would make a difference either way)

I'm going to try this out sometime this week and I'll post my all time favorite bread recipe!!!!

I am all for sharing recipies. I have a couple I'll put down, one of which has worked great for me! Lee, I found a great oatmeal recipie, though it may not be exactly what you're looking for.

Homemade Instant Oatmeal (yeilds 8 servings)

•3 cups quick-cooking oats
•1 teaspoon salt
•8 sandwich-size plastic baggies
Crumb one cup of the oats in your blender until powdery.

In each plastic baggy, combine 2 Tablespoons of the powdered oats, 1/4 cup unprocessed oats and
1/8 teaspoon salt.

Consider adding some of these extras (per bag):

•1 Tablespoon brown sugar
•1/4 teaspoon cinnamon and 1/2 teaspoon white sugar
•1 Tablespoon raisins
•1 Tablespoon chocolate chips

To serve: Empty contents of one bag into a bowl. Add 3/4 cup boiling water. Stir and let stand for 2 minutes. For thicker oatmeal, use less water - for thinner oatmeal, use more water.

This sounds like it would be pretty tasty, found it on mrbreakfast.com

Now this other recipie I was sooo lucky to find. I actually got it from a friend who got the idea from the dugger family. (woman with 18 kids!!!) Anyway, I have used this and it's great! Its not food but if your in a pinch you can spend 3 bucks for 100-200 loads of laundry (depending on the size of your family)! brace yourself....

Homemade Liquid Laundry Soap- Front or top load machine- best value

4 Cups - hot tap water
1 Fels-Naptha soap bar
1 Cup - Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda*
½ Cup Borax

- Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan with water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted.

-Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda and Borax. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. Fill bucket to top with more hot water. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken.

-Stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of way with water. Shake before each use. (will gel)

-Optional: You can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap has cooled. Ideas: lavender, rosemary, tea tree oil.

-Yield: Liquid soap recipe makes 10 gallons.

-Top Load Machine- 5/8 Cup per load (Approx. 180 loads)

-Front Load Machines- ¼ Cup per load (Approx. 640 loads)

*Arm & Hammer "Super Washing Soda" - in some stores or may be purchased online here (at Meijer.com). Baking Soda will not work, nor will Arm & Hammer Detergent - It must be sodium carbonate!!

Powdered Laundry Detergent - Top load machine

1 Fels-Naptha soap bar
1 Cup - Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda*
½ Cup Borax

-Grate soap or break into pieces and process in a food processor until powdered. Mix all ingredients. For light load, use 1 Tablespoon. For heavy or heavily soiled load, use 2 Tablespoons. Yields: 3 Cups detergent. (Approx. 40 loads)

*Arm & Hammer "Super Washing Soda" - in some stores or may be purchased online here (at Meijer.com). Baking Soda will not work, nor will Arm & Hammer Detergent - It must be sodium carbonate!!



TIPS FOR LAUNDRY SOAP: We use Fels-Naptha bar soap in the homemade soap recipes, but you can use Ivory, Sunlight, Kirk's Hardwater Castile or Zote bars. Don't use heavily perfumed soaps. We buy Fels-Naptha by the case from our local grocer or online. Washing Soda and Borax can often be found on the laundry or cleaning aisle. Recipe cost approx. $2 per batch.

I have done both liquid and powder forms and its fantastic!!! Let me know if you have any questions about this one! All the ingredients can be found at publix...I havn't checked wal-mart but I'm sure its there too. You can add scented oil if you want as well. Ok, I think I went a bit crazy with this post but thought I'd pass it on!

640 loads!!! That caught my eye! Thats insane...think how long that would last for a newly wed couple! How long does it take to make the liquid? I've never heard of that soap bar you mentioned but I'll hunt through publix for sure : ) I'll have to dig up some recipies.

Ok so here is my bread recipie. I actually pulled it from online and tryed it (Lost my other recipie!!! still lookin though)


Ingredients:

• 2 tsp honey
• 1 tbsp vegetable oil
• 1 cup warm water
• 1 tsp salt
• 1-1/2 tsp active dry yeast
• 2 tbsp dry milk
• 2 tbsp raw wheat bran
• 1-1/2 cups whole wheat flour
• 1/2 cup plus 1 tbsp bread flour
Preparation:

1. In medium bowl, add honey, vegetable oil, and warm water. Stir.
2. Stir in salt, yeast, dry milk, and raw wheat bran.
3. Mix in whole wheat flour, then mix in about 1/4 cup bread flour.
4. Turn dough out onto lightly floured board and knead the remaining 1/4 cup plus tablespoon of bread flour into the dough for about 5 minutes. When finished, the dough will be slightly sticky.
5. Grease medium size bowl. Put dough into bowl and turn dough over so that the top of dough is lightly greased. Cover with clean cloth and let dough rise in warm place for about 45 minutes or until double in size.
6. Turn dough out onto board and knead out air bubbles for about 3 minutes. Shape into bread loaf.
7. Grease bread pan. Sprinkle cornmeal on bread pan, if desired. Place loaf in pan. Cover and let rise for about 30 minutes or until double in size.
8. Bake bread at 350 degrees F for 40 minutes. Turn out on rack or onto clean kitchen towel and allow to cool.
9. Bread can be frozen in a sealed freezer bag for up to 3 months.

Instead of honey I use agave nector which is really yummy. It has the same calorie content as honey but its just a different consistency.

I use the website www.tammysrecipes.com a lot!!! I found it a few months ago and it has really helped me out a lot : )

I have a great whole wheat recipe... I do all of this by hand but if you have a kitchen aid or a bread machine I'm sure I'd be easier.

Ingredients (Yields one loaf)
2.5 teaspoons yeast
1 tsp sugar
1.25 tsp salt
1 cup warmish water (not burning hot, but warm)
1/4 cup honey, molasses, or maple syrup
1/4 cup oil (I use olive, but probably other veggie oil will work)
1/4 soy or rice milk
3.5 cups flour (whole wheat and regular white mixed) --I recommend 2.5 cups whole and 1 cup white

- Mix the first four ingredients in a large bowl together to proof the yeast, put in a warm place for about 10 min.
-get a large rising bowl ready and oil it up and find a clean cloth to place over
- put the remaining ingredients into the yeast bowl when done and stir ingredients with wooden spoon until sticky
- roll out onto oiled or floured table knead for 7-10 minutes
- put dough in oiled bowl and cover (I roll the dough in the oil so both sides are covered and put it in a warmed oven) Let rise for and hour or until it has doubled in size

- knead dough only a couple of times and shape into the loaf pan (have loaf pan oiled)
- plop into loaf pan, cover, and place in warm oven or warm area for about an hour or until dough rises above the pan

- take loaf out of oven and preheat 350d and then put it in for about 45 min- 1 hour or until top is browned.

I've used this recipe twice so far and they turned out great.
